LMC:
Does acting interfere with the FX work? Are you able to apply on
the set and still act?
RK:
Doing
the makeup effects and acting is definitely a big challenge. You
have to be able to set aside any stress you may experience as a
makeup artist once the acting hat is put on. When doing makeup you
have to be focused on the job at hand, so you can't exactly be
running your lines. Also the dynamic of the actor/makeup artist
relationship changes. Suddenly you are not just the makeup person
but you are part of the cast as well. I have actually found that the
actors are a bit more cooperative when they get in the chair,
knowing that you are an actor also. Suddenly you are one of them,
not just a crew member. The real trick is being well prepared. You
have to have your lines well rehearsed, so that you don't have to
concern yourself with acting while applying makeups... and vice
versa. With Frankenstein it was pretty hectic, due to the tight
schedule, so on some of the busier days I think that the makeup
application wasn't as good as it could have been. Overall the
experience was fantastic - it allowed me to have a greater impact on
the outcome of the film, and I had the opportunity to not only
create the monsters, but become one as well
.
LMC:
Where do
you see your studio (or career) in 5 years... 15-20 years?
RK:
It
is hard to say where my career will be in the next five years let
alone the next twenty years. My short term goal is to expand my shop
and hire a permanent crew of twelve or more effects artists. I am
also seeking to do my own productions and free myself from the
constraints of the Hollywood film industry. I have many projects in
the works, one being a puppet show. To self produce is a long and
tedious process, unless you have a lot of money and can afford to
hire people to do the work for you. Unfortunately I am not
independently wealthy. . . yet. So like everyone else, I have to go
about self -producing my own projects at a snail's pace. I do see
myself taking on more acting roles in the future as I have
discovered that I have a knack for character acting. Being an
effects artist seems to help me to get character parts because I can
use my skills to make myself look more like the character in the
script. This gives me the edge over the average actor, and it
excites the directors and producers because they can mold me into
the part as opposed to just searching for someone with the look and
the acting skills. I am already off to a great start , we're only
half way through the year and I already have three acting gigs, not
bad for a beginner!
LMC: If you have 10
million dollars in the bank, what would you be doing?
RK:
Aside form the
obvious; buy a new house, new car and pay off debts. . . I would
travel the world and visit all of the places that I have wanted to
go. I would also help out some of my family
members
and friends that could use the money. With what was left I would
invest half and use the other half to produce my own film projects
and hopefully be able to sell them and double or even triple my
investment. These days ten million dollars isn't really that much, I
mean it is, but it isn't. I think I could easily spend ten million
dollars in one day if I wasn't careful. So I would be very frugal
and try to spend the money wisely. Most importantly I would share
the wealth. I would try to help out fellow artists that are
struggling and give them jobs, and I would try to give back
something to the
community. I am not sure if ten million dollars is enough to do
everything that I would want to do, so I guess I will have to make
even more money than that.
